Just got back from Indietracks, some lovely new bands, but I have one better -
http://clarkpowell.bandcamp.com/
Ambient musings that immediately made me think of YKK. Country I Never Saw starts off slow, but give it a chance!

Clark Powell (>>39) and Geotic are both very Post Office related.

Can you guys tell me why Opera is good? I keep trying to get into it but I just...can't. But at the same time I really don't have a good reason for not doing so.

Gave the album 'God Cable' by 'Noodles' a try. The guitars have a got a rich, dirty sound that reminds me of Bloodthirsty Butchers'. In every song is something that'll challenge the listener, if not plenty. The way they choose their notes and progressions is really interesting. I'll spend a lot of time exploring this album.

I've been listening to quite a bit of vaporware. It combines dreaminess and nostalgia into an ambient mish-mash of 80's and computers.

White Waking by Les Rallizes Denudes. Heard it while playing Space Funeral.

I think this version is slightly cleaner, in terms of sound/audio, than the one in the game:

Loved the credits theme, too.

There are two similar bands that I've really been loving lately.

相対性理論 (Soutaiseiriron) and ナンバタタン (Nanbatatan). It's not even necessarily the sweet sounding vocals, but the happy and relaxed atmosphere I appreciate. It's the first time in a while that I've had an emotional reaction from music. Check them out if you like light pop with female vocals.

I like The Black Dog a lot, they make idm and ambient.
I really find it strange how there's absolutely nobody who listens to them around when things like BoC are so loved.
They definitely need some more love.

I found a nice song recently through goose house. 遠く遠く by Noriyuki Makihara. It's about moving on for the sake of the past.

Here's Hiromi Uehara, an incredibly talented jazz pianist who was mentored by the legendary Ahmad Jamal.
She's one of my favorite musicians ever, I first saw her live at the Atlanta Jazz Festival in 2010 and fell in love.

I've been listening to a lot of Talking Heads almost exclusively lately. I've gone through '77, More Songs About Buildings And Food, Fear of Music, Remain in Light, and Speaking in Tongues. There's a lot of really good stuff. The pre-Remain-in-Light albums are pretty good too, but they change so much during and after that one album that I mentally categorize them into pre-RIL and post-RIL.

The earlier albums are really good, tense and anxious, and at their best the lyrics a really poignant attempt to reach out to other people while suffering disconnect and anxiety (Who is it?, The Book I Read, Artists Only), even with humor (Animals from Fear of Music is a parody/paranoid rant against animals, pets, wildlife). Sometimes Byrne gets too full of himself though, and the lyrics become shallow, petty, and selfish. e.g., in Talking Heads' "The Big Country" he spends the whole time complaining about rural America while flying over it and ends the song by broadly dismissing every person who doesn't live in a city: "I wouldn't live there even if you paid me / It's not even worth talking / about those people down there." Of the first 3 albums, I think the weakest is Fear of Music (it has a weird 90's alt-rock vibe that I don't really dig) and the best is '77 with its pared-down and incredible about-to-snap tension that makes even a repetitive song like Who Is It? sound good.

RIL itself is a real masterpiece of an album. It's not "personal" like the earlier albums, but I find it's way more empathic (I think Seen And Not Seen is a really haunting tribute to insecurity and WANTING to fit in and be like other people, Once In A Lifetime is a thoughtful, emotionally straightforward, and sympathetic wondering about a kind of existential drudgery or tedium) and even the tense songs at the beginning are way beyond anything on the first albums. The addition of Byrne's pseudo-chanting/pseudo-preaching style is just incredible too. The Great Curve is simultaneously intensely ominous and energetic (Night must fall now / Darker, Darker! / She is moving by remote control), which is a great musical feat to listen to.

Even though I feel some of the earlier albums can get petty and selfish and lack empathy (one song includes the sarcastic line about how he feels when people visit his apartment: "I'll put down what I'm doing, my friends are important."), they're really made up for by his later and solo albums. The album Everything That Happens Will Happen Today is an authentic and hopeful-in-the-face-of-hopelessness look at a sort of middle-class/suburban grindstone that is a complete reversal of his thoughts and ideas in songs like "The Big Country" that are entirely dismissive of that same lifestyle, with a lot of great songs like the title-track, Life is Long (my favorite of the album), Home, and Strange Overtones.

I Should Watch TV, although it sounds like it should be another 90s-edgy-style "haha stupid sheeple" is such an empathic reaching out towards other human beings he can't understand (The more I lost myself / The more it set me free / How am I not your brother? / How are you not like me?). His later work can get sad, but he's not sappy about it and presents an incredibly mature development from his earlier thought. I really love how you can trace his development from the first album in the '70s to his later stuff in the 2000s. It's poignant, sympathetic, and it's very easy for me to relate to his songs about trying to reach out and understand others (and occasionally failing, but continuing to be hopeful).

Sorry for the musical rant, but I've been listening to this music a lot and I think about it a lot too.

I've recently discovered a bootleg live performance of a band I really like that was recorded with songs that I've never heard, and a lot of variety on the ones I already know. It's the Velvet Underground playing at Valley Dale Ballroom in 1966. Here's one of the songs that was played differently than on the album, Run Run Run from The Velvet Underground and Nico https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw6ATQgMU5g It has a cooler, laid back vibe to it than the album version.
I'm pretty happy I found this.

I've really been enjoying Brazilian music lately, mostly Bossa Nova and MPB. Currently I'm trying to dig deeper than the handful of popular names (mostly successful in the USA because they collaborated with American musicians like Stan Getz) but I'm having difficulty finding good resources since I don't speak Portuguese.

My latest favorite is the album "F.C." by Novos Baianos, it gets me movin' & groovin' with a smile on my face every time I put it on.

I suppose its more or less japanese noise-rock, but it has a special sort of melancholic feeling too sometimes, that resonates with the feelings from when I was hikki.
the bittersweetness of a high school anime OP melody put to screeching noise that sounds like its being played on a broken stereo, with lyrics about... Well, im not sure exactly what its about enough to say, even though I can get through the lyrics, with translation. It seems to fit though.

You only listen to music so you can project an image onto yourself, using it to disguise the fact that you're an empty husk with nothing interesting about you, to replace your lack of a personality, as a conversation starter, as a desperate attempt to connect to people so you don't feel so alone.

I tried a lot of different terms in a meta-search engine, and looked at every even barely relevant result, and searched around them more, but all I found was long dead filesharing pages, and fraudulent links that led me to ads for usenet subscriptions. If thats wrong, I dont expect you to point to where they can be found, but It would be good of you.

Youre probably gonna get banned when the admin comes back but you should relax. Music isnt like a community, nothing about it changes depending on who else knows about it. I like HASAMI because it conveys feelings and moods like ones I remember well, and sings about such things, but that I rarely see in other art. I post about it because I hope someone can post similar things, or point me to where to find 青春時代 or flower. And if they cant, sharing something nice with a small community is nice, and actually making posts to such places is important, if people just lurk it dies.

For whatever reason I feel a sense of ownership and entitlement when it comes to the things I like, and this mixed with my distrust and anger towards everybody probably due to my lack of friends and me being insecure makes me feel irrational anger and hatred when I see people sharing some of the more obscure artists I listen to, which is ironic considering that without the Internet's history of sharing data and information I wouldn't have access to or even knowledge of the majority of music I listen to. You're right in that it does not affect me in the slightest whether or not more people listen to it, unlike a messageboard or forum. Although I am afraid of artists I like gaining a large following in the west and having to run into shitty memes about them and normalfaggots circlejerking them in comment sections. I hope I've explained myself thoroughly, continue doing whatever you please.

I'm not spoonfeeding you, think of it as a right of passage.

You know, you were talking about your favorite board being ruined by outsiders, at the same time as making shitposts like those in total disregard of this place, which you said you'd just found's, tone and culture. Hes not wrong to be dismissive.
Those artists probably already get all of that from japanese normals though. They're not any better than western ones you know. I dont know what other ones you listen to, but the quest for 青春時代 involved some japanese posts about them on instagram. And its not like everyone who uses 2ch is a truNEET hikki otaku, regarding the 2ch archive threads about them. When everythings published on the internet, on the web at that, there is no real obscurity, its a relative term.

(help page says bbcode works, I hope it is true)

I also am afraid of this happening, word for word. I revel in obscurity. I'm not sure I would say it's because I don't have a personality and I supplement it with my interests (like reddit douchebags would say); I think I've always been an outsider and I've searched long and hard to find the things I enjoy. I spent years developing my tastes and the context for understanding the things I like. When they become memes and everyone likes them, I know they don't understand it like I do! There's no way they could! I usually can't even hold a conversation with normal people about say Dark Souls, even though I've been a fan of From since before Demon's Souls. They never ever understand the actual appeal of the game and had to watch YouTube lore videos to even grasp that there was world building to begin with.

Sorry for rambling. It's nice when you meet other people who understand you. I've always been an outsider.

Drudkh is pretty rad. I think my favorite record of theirs is probably Microcosmos, at least it's the one that I've listened to the most by them. I was really into digging for new black metal bands for a while, but I've sorta dropped out of it lately. Think I just got burned out, maybe I'll return some day. Some of my favorites are Nagelfar, Paysage d'Hiver, Endlichkeit, & Shaidar Logoth.

What instruments do my post office friends play? I've been trying to learn piano lately and after I practice I feel like I've made a little progress, but then I'll listen to a recording with a decent pianist and I get crushed because I realize I have such a long way to go. Oh well, just need to keep playing every day and I'll get there eventually.

I play bass! I've only been playing since mid december but I think I've made a lot of good progress so far. Being able to lock in with the groove of a song is so much fun, physically feeling the music is so different from just passive listening.

It can be easy to get discouraged when you have access to so many recordings of skilled musicians these days, try not to let it get you down, everyone starts somewhere! I don't know if this helps but I try to look to recordings as a sort of goal to work towards. Instead of getting discouraged I find myself motivated to keep working hard to reach the proficiency of the recording.

I also love learning music by ear, it's challenging but really rewarding. I get to hear all these tiny nuances when transcribing that I wouldn't hear otherwise. Here's part of a bassline that I transcribed recently: https://vocaroo.com/i/s0cY7lAwVTTQ

that's pretty great for just a few months of practice! I play both guitar and bass, getting used to bass was very easy after already learning with guitar, but I can't imagine how rough the first couple weeks of bass playing must be if you've never worked your fingers like that before.

One of my favorite things to do playing bass is put on a funk/soul record and just play along to the whole thing by ear.

As for my progress on piano, yeah it'll get better but after playing stringed instruments for 14 years and being pretty good at them, it's frustrating to be at a beginner level again. Just gotta put in that effort.

I am a horse with no legs
I've been rolling around town since I was a small horse
Wobblin' and hobblin' and getting stared at by tourists
And I am here to stay until God calls me one day to go in the sky and I die
But till then I will roll and play and do the best I can
I know they sometimes laugh at me
It makes my mom cry but
I am not afraid of shame
I am cool with what I am
The other horses might be tall
And have super big legs
But unlike some of them
I am free and that is more important to me
I didn't expect to live this long
And I know it could still end at any moment
Everytime I think about it it scares me but just a little bit
Cause realistically there's a bunch of things that could have happened to me
And it's pretty cool to be alive at all
And I'll do the best I can to reach my goals but I don't get too
Anxious about it I try to stay calm and
Remember that a horse like me
Is still a fine thing to be.

I recently rediscovered Kayo Dot.
Their first two albums, Choirs of the Eye and Downsing Anemone with Copper Tongue, are as good as it get, some of the best music ever produced.
Blue Lambency Downward and a few albums that follow are also incredible, but took me a while to really get into.
The latter middle years sort of feel to me like they're trying to capture the magic of their first releases, but falling short.
Their latest album though, is a whole new trip - Totally different, but I really really like it.

I love Akina, but I don't think I've heard that song. What album is it from?

It's not my favorite, but I feel like the album of hers I listen to the most is Enka.

If you haven't heard Fushigi, you should absolutely give it a listen. It's really strange for such a popular singer, almost dream pop or shoegaze.

Dear post office visitors,
I and probably have you stumbled upon this song recently

Does any of you know how you would call this song's ''genre''? Especially considering the instrumentals.

I'm really not sure. Maybe hip-hop?
305 Name: Anonymous : 2019-08-24 11:31

I guess I'd call it hip hop. Especially since "Lil Boom" used it as a beat to one of his songs.

I think the rhythm section they overlay starting from 0:10 is definitely hip hop, but I think before that it has more of a Bossa Nova vibe. Just with a slightly faster pace for it be more poppy.

"Sweet Home Alabama" is not a rockabilly confederate anthem like it's been painted as by popular culture. Instead, it's a melancholic, bittersweet, and yet somewhat hopeful look into the mind of someone who comes from a culture--the Deep South--that's been associated with one of the greatest self-described American wrongs--slavery--next to Nazism in the Pandemonium of American Evils.

The narrator of the song is tongue-and-cheek because, after the scandal of Watergate, which challenged American confidence not only in the government, but in the moral judgement of the masses who put the government there in the first place, most Americans--Northerners, as the narrator might say--were shell-shocked. Not only did they participate in terrible, destructive lie, but they did so happily and of their own free will. The country as a whole now had to reckon with what the more self-aware citizens of the Deep South had been dealing with for almost a century post-Civil War--how do you go on as a person knowing that you willingly complied with all the things in the world you find to be abhorrent and unjust. How can you trust yourself to make the right call when you're all of the sudden told that everything you've stood for is not only wrong, but foul and ultimately dangerous and inhumane.

This is the reason for the line, "Now Watergate does not bother me/does your conscience bother you?" The narrator is nudging his Northern friends and asking them how they're doing knowing they helped build injustice, the very thing their cultural identity is built around preventing.

Lynyrd Skynyrd wasn't a bunch of toothless gray-uniformed hillbillies out of Florida--they were a smart, rough group of guys from a rough part of the country, who represented, in their own way, a potential ideal form for the Southern Man. Caring, compassionate, witty, rough around the edges, and most of all, earnest to look out for those who've had their cultural autonomy taken away by an inherited generational horror. It makes me sad to think that most people will only know them as what MCA made them out to be, not who they really were. If you listen to their songs, there's real compassion and a kind of fraternal feeling to them. I wish I could tell them how much I appreciate them trying to fight against what people thought they were to show them instead what they could be.

Tl:dr

Glad to hear you liked them anon. Although I'm sorry to say I can't think of any band that's quite the same as Animal Collective and Panda Bear for me. Although maybe that's just a sentimental attachment on my part. If you want more, I recommend checking out the album Person Pitch:

https://youtu.be/9t9zg0oeIKw

Another album which is slightly less accessible is Tomboy, but I think this album rework makes it a bit more listenable:

https://youtu.be/DtXfzjoccMA

From there, I'd highly recommend checking out the rest of the Animal Collective albums, though some are more upbeat than relaxed (prospect hummer is very very chill). Band member Deakin's solo album Sleep Cycle is great too.

As for other chill music, I find a lot of the slower, less funky city pop and other Japanese music pretty relaxing, although it doesn't hit those same emotional highs as the other stuff I mentioned. That said, this album is full of super chill good vibes:

It's a compilation of ambient music, made by musical doujin/indie artists.
