YKK - ARIA

1 Name: Anonymous : 2013-06-20 14:18
Because a lot of people here come from the ykkaria imageboard, I thought a seperate thread would be appropriate.

Someone has started doing high quality scans of all the YKK volumes, but he hasn't updated his site in a while now. I hope he didn't think it was too much work after all.

I don't like the direction this is going.

I'm still praying for an English release.

I found this nice manga series about a girl called Emanon. She really reminded of YKK's misago and it also has an overall mysteriously slow atmosphere. I uploaded two volumes here: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/fdy7lmspedfx1/Emanon

I'd like to read YKK in dead tree form. Acclimate Solutions sells translations on separate pages in addition to the manga itself. Are they any good?

I was interested in buying them too, but at the time I couldn't find any reviews of them online.
7 Name: Anonymous : 2013-07-02 23:45
So, I watched Aria The Animation series. I liked it. But I only recently found out there's more to the anime than just the series. I couple of OVAs I guess.

What order are you supposed to/should I watch them in?
8 Name: Anonymous : 2013-07-03 09:47
>>7
This is the suggested order:

Aria the Animation
Aria the Natural
Aria the Natural Special
Aria the OVA: Arietta
Aria the Origination
Aria the Origination Picture Drama
Aria the Origination Special

Enjoy!

That manga sure looks nice.

Admin-kun, do you think there will be some kind on imageboard in the future like there was in the past? I mean I can't post on it, will there ever be something functional again?

You don't like using textboards? I can't build upon the old ykkaria imageboard, because we only have cached versions of the webpages, so we would have to start all over again.

I also don't feel comfortable dividing the site more as it is. If you have any other requests to make the textboard more to your liking, I'd love to hear them.

It's not that I don't like textboards. In fact, I love them! I was just curious (´・ω・`)

Fun fact, it was YKK that inspired me to buy a scooter.
Driving that thing makes me feel like I'm flying. Just one meter above the ground.

What other manga specifically do you guys think is similar to stuff like YKK, Aria, Mushishi, Yotsubato, ect.
15 Name: Anonymous : 2013-07-28 08:20
>>14
Kabu no Isaki, Emma in a sense, are similar to YKK. Master Keaton and Black Jack are similar to Mushishi as they have a benevolent protagonist travelling and helping people, but there is no supernatural. Azumanga Daioh and Ryuushika Ryuushika for Yotsubato!.

Also, I would like to share this YKK review I published. It took me a lot of time (though the hiatuses were many and extended, I did start in late 2012) and I'm very ecstatic to finally be able to share this piece of writing. http://myanimelist.net/profile/lpfManiak/reviews

He said that in a recent Kabu no Isaki thread: "Sorry, life got in the way for quite a few months and then I was lazy. I do intend to start it up again though, I just need to get my arse in gear already." http://archive.foolz.us/a/thread/97683481/#q97684234

Be careful with the spoiler texts as they talk about the last chapters of KnI.

I wonder why Kawakami is listed at the end. Perhaps they have some unused voice work from her?

In episode 5 of Animation,
"Alicia! Maybe this island really is Neverland. Maybe the entire world of Aqua itself is Neverland."
"Perhaps. You'd never think this landscape was created by people. It's an impossible world."

And in episode 12
"Aqua is a handmade planet."
"A handmade planet...?"
"A world built by the hands and sweat and hopes of countless people."
"You're right. People who never gave up despite countless failures. People determined to create a world overflowing with happiness. So many miracles occurred, as if in answer to their wishes. And now we have the Aqua we have today."

Both are literally true. The world of Aqua is something that Kozue Amano and the people at HAL and the readers and viewers made. It upset me a lot when I realized this. It's hard to say why.

Does anyone know if the YKK HQ rescan project has moved ahead at all?
30 Name: Anonymous : 2015-05-18 06:47
I started watching ARIA a while ago, I'm really enjoying it a lot.
I feared I might get bored real soon but that's absolutely not the case, I'm looking forward to watching an episode each day.

Yesterday I was daydreaming a bit and imagining how nice it would be to have a ride in a gondola with Akari.
Suddenly I felt like there was so much to talk about with her while I'm usually not very talkative at all.
Maybe because she seems a person that doesn't mind to talk about little everyday things, the things that would be embarrassing to talk about with normal people.
She is a very open person, that makes her very appealing.

Maybe I should strife to be more like her.

What the hell, that's pretty funny. I thought Esperanto was a failed language attempt, wonder if this is a quality translation.

I started watching an episode of Origination and it started with Undine. Thought it was a special episode, but I just opened the wrong file. I was a little bit disappointed, but I decided to rewatch it instead of watching what I had intended to. It was a good call, a really sweet episode that I had mostly forgotten.

I'm sad at it's demise too. At the time I had just finished reading YKK and I was on cloud 9. To have an imageboard that embraced the YKK ideals was incredible.

I wanted to read YKK for years, but I never got around to do so. I never even saw a single panel.
Well, today I found this neat manga called Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō and it looked really good so I began reading it. Halfway through the second volume I realized it's YKK, haha.
40 Name: Anonymous : 2016-04-26 12:35
I have watched ARIA the Animation and the Natural and I enjoyed it way too much for my own good.
Now I am a bit hesitant to start on Origination, I can't handle it when an ending comes in sight.

So I keep pushing it away, wanting to save it for a really special time but in the end I'm just selling myself short.

I'll start today.

What I wouldn't give to see YKK make an English release.
I was browsing bookdepository and found out ARIA had an English release around 2008, which of course is all sold out now.

Makes me so sad one of the very few books I absolutely need on my bookshelf, both series had a big impact on me.

It's a shame they only did a few volumes for Aqua/Aria. I think they just did 7 volumes in total, before Tokyopop gave up on it. ADV released a few volumes too, but they didn't do a release for Aqua. Would love to have a complete collection.

I think I read someone claim Tokyopop assumed a lot more people would buy the books, but a lot of people also had the ADV release already, and was waiting for Tokyopop to catch up.

So, it probably won't happen in the future.
Especially when it comes to YKK, whatever publisher might give it a go, I assume there's just not enough interest for it to be profitable.
So either I have to quickly make a load of dosh and pay for a release myself or I accept that we have nothing but our memories of it.

You could say it's almost in the spirit of the series to slowly disappear like this.

I think YKK is the likelier of the two, actually; it's never been trialed, whereas Aria/Aqua has been trialed and failed.

I'm trying to look for some information about the author of YKK and it turns out Ashinano Hitoshi is basically a phantom. One photo, an interview from YKK OVA bonuses and some personal tidbits from volume backpages is all I can find.

Do you know anything about him, post officers? I know he used to be in a doujinshi circle but only few of his works are actually scanned

I think there's a few bits and pieces on Misago, but not much: http://wakaba.c3.cx/ykk/misago/

I certainly am very fortunate that I happened to stumble upon the right parts of the internet to learn about YKK and ARIA. Both had a big impact on my life in how they changed my view on the impermanence of life and everything around us.

It also took me a while to realize, at first I kinda disregarded it because of the medium, I had the mindset that some chinese comic couldn't possibly influence me, fortunately I opened up and felt reborn with a new appreciation for the things that are often overlooked.

I find it quite amazing how dedicated he is to this series. After reading a few bits of his blog I can definitely relate.

Also, there's going to be an English reprint of ARIA available sometime next year and that has me excited.
I really want to get it, even put some money aside for it already as I don't want to miss this opportunity to finally get a physical copy.
I pray that YKK gets the same treatment.

That sounds great. I bought the Tokyopop release back then. Was very disappointed when I learned that they weren't going to release the rest of the volumes. I hope the new print will be of the complete series, and not a third run of the first half.

I hope this time they finish all 2+12 volumes. Was such a downer when Tokyopop announced they wouldn't release the rest of the volumes back when they did their first run.

Must've been worse for those that bought the ADV releases, since they got let down twice.

Probably really late but he also goes by the name 'Suuke', you can find some of his works in some hentai websites (probably just 3 books)
In his Come Together book he includes some extra YKK art

What do you guys think of Kabu no Isaki and Kotonoba Drive? I really loved them both, at times maybe even more so than YKK (although it's hard to beat YKK as a whole). The coloured parts of Kotonoba Drive are absolutely phenomenal.
80 Name: Anonymous : 2019-11-27 23:27
>>78
Extra info - he's under the doujin circle Tokkan Kouji.
I got all this from doujinshi.org and looking up YKK.
Probably a stretch, but if anyone happens to visit this website and have a copy of the doujinshi 'Yokodashi', PLEASE upload it somewhere - it apparently also talks about Alpha's inner workings (circuitry? lost in translation) and some other things. Just bothers me that this used to be online as I saw it as a download in the archived cafealpha.org website.

>>79
Haven't read them yet, still entranced by the afterglow from reading YKK, heard good things about them though.
81 Name: Anonymous : 2019-11-28 12:25
>>79
I liked Kotonoba better than Kabu but Kabu has a better setting for development. In the end Kabu felt unfished, even for Amano standards but since Kotonoba's settings allowed it to end any time, it gave a feeling of "i want more but am ok with this".
82 Name: Anonymous : 2019-11-28 17:59
>>81
That's true, the ending to Kabu was a bit abrubt. But was it so different to the end of YKK? I don't know how to express it without the cliché, but they both feel more about the journey than the destination.
83 Name: Anonymous : 2019-12-21 14:43
>>82
I don't remember how abrupt the ends are compared to each other but YKK gave us much more information, quirks, time and development (specially physical) which Kabu didn't do as much. It kept our bellies more filled even if we were still hungry after the meal.
84 Name: Anonymous : 2019-12-27 18:01
Currently re-reading YKK; i'm only on around 110 pages but it is amazing to see -with the future in hindsight- the way time is handled, the relationship between what is to come and has past, the memories of our experiences, it's just lovely to see all this again in a new light and perceive things i haven't before.

I'm a little jealous being a "YKK main" but still happy Aria is getting new content. I'll take whatever. Maybe it will be an original sequel? like Avvenire but not based on any manga chapters?

It's cool Avvenire adapted more manga stories, still a little sad neither ch.47 Epiphany and ch.49 The Four Seasons were never adapted. Two of my favourites.

You've linked to the YKK MAL club, but from what I see you didn't look at its comment section - this club has moved to Discord, just like most communities. I think it's one of the most active YKK Discord communities.
You may also be interested in adding the hatsuseno.org page to the links section, since it's a mirror of the yugen manga scanlation set up by the person who used to run that MAL club.

feel free to ask on Discord for guidance.

This link doesn't work, BTW.

Thanks!

Thanks! I've linked their Discord at the top of the page actually. I didn't add hatsuseno's page because it says it's Misago's scans on there(?) I fixed the broken link, thanks!

Thanks! I've linked their Discord at the top of the page actually.

Someone running the server changed their nickname, fooling me into thinking it was some other server.

I didn't add hatsuseno's page because it says it's Misago's scans on there(?)

My memory's played a trick on me, I thought I downloaded my copies from hatsuseno, but they came from yugen. If I understand the text on hatsuseno's page right, they're Misago scans alright.

Wow, I know others have already said, and I don't want to make a redundant comment, but this is a really nice little site. Very good work! I wish I was this good a designer.

Did you only create it recently? I could've sworn I've seen it before a long time ago.

Responding here to keep YKK stuff in one thread.

One step closer to getting an official English translation, yay! If we do, I wonder if they'll base it off the French translation

It looks very sophisticated, I like it a lot.
Has a very nostalgic feel to it and fits YKK perfectly.

>>100
I hope it does well in France, I'm still hoping for a printed English copy after all these years.

With the way a lot of new translators are, I'm not optimistic.

Go the first volume of the French edition, so far it’s good.

I'm so jealous of you frenchies.
Honestly, can I buy it in america anyway? I'd buy it just to have a physical copy of the art.

I got it on French Amazon

8 years later, my god why hasn't yen press done this already? If they gave it the otoyomegatari treatment i would just die.

I should've stuck with French when I had the chance.
Oh well, I pray for an English release.
Also waiting on the last volume of Aria the Masterpiece, I missed the original release in february and it was quite a struggle to find as it was sold out in all the places where I usually get physical books and manga. But I found it.
Kinda wonder how well it has been doing in sales, I have a feeling it wasn't super popular. Though I enjoyed it a whole lot.

I always have this anxious and bittersweet feeling whenever I read YKK. Does anyone experience something the same?

Crepuscolo is out on BD now. There's also a new 72-page companion manga chapter titled "Special Navigation: AQUARIA II", similar to the one for Avvenire titled "Special Navigation: AQUARIA".

Navigation 47 is one of the more memorable chapters for me too. They've finally adapted it as part of Crepuscolo. It's great.

There's still one more film in the works, Benedizione.

This is fantastic news. I just recently read it for the first time, and I made out with too many screencaps to count. Now to redo all of them... At least they'll be pretty!

Anyone watched the crepusculo movie yet? Subs came out around 2 days ago.

I googled what that was and the American 2008 movie Twilight so I'll assume that's the wrong thing.

Between all the Iyashikei anime, Aria is not my favorite. YKK is my favorite. But it's still pretty great and I am so happy for it to get more.

Benedizione is out now too. It adapts "Special Navigation: AQUARIA III".

I wonder if this marks the end of ARIA? I thought so with Origination, and again with Avvenire, but I was pleasantly surprised with respect to both. So I wouldn't be surprised if they come out with another continuation in another five or ten years' time. Something to note is that the latest chapter of Kozue Amano's new manga, Colori Colore Creare, ends on a panel that depicts and name-drops Neo-Venezia, so it'll be interesting to see where things go with that.
