Moral buying habits?

Do any of you make a point to only buy or use things when you know that the place it comes from has no shady economic/labor practices? Or for other reasons?

For example, I really like to buy food from farmers markets or local privately owned stores that only work with local farms. I like being able to keep my money circulating in the local economy instead of spending it at a big chain grocery store. Meaning my money will be sent off to some big CEOs account in the Bahamas. Or at least that's what I feel like will happen. I could very well be wrong.

Another example is that I go to a local game shop instead of Gamestop for my vidjya. It's privately owned by a guy who loves games and all the employees actually love, and play, video games just as much as I do. I feel a lot better spending my money there.

I don't buy EA games, and whenever I have a computer problem I can't fix myself I go to this father and son computer repair shop instead of a major one

I don't buy games anymore, period. The system is all shot anyway. I tried steam for a bit but I caught myself getting caught up in "deals" rather than true interest of the game. The last non-regretful game I bought, or rather funded, was wasteland 2 more than a year ago because that Fargo guy seemed genuine in his videos and I believed in his cause.

As for OP's original question, I closed my ebay and paypal accounts because of the practices they had and how many MANY other people were screwed by them and I didn't want to be next. That and any place that borderline demands direct access to you bank account, and excuse me for saying this, but they can go straight to hell.

The one online shopper I cannot do without is Amazon. I heard about how they treated their workers horribly and how after it was publicized they immediately started PR damage control by fixing it which eases my mind if only microscopically. The benefits far outweigh my moral backbone though since I have saved thousands of dollars in time, fuel, wear and tear on my car(i live far from stores ~20-30 minutes) etc. by having practically the world's goods at my front door step.

At least it has cut down on me going to Walmart. I relish seeing them in the same spot they put all those mom&pop shops they mercilessly cut down over the years.

Since I live in the city, I go to the local REWE which is a grocery store known all around Germany. But after reading >>1-san post, I might reconsider my actions. There are plenty of shops runned by foreigners around my school and a big Russian store with stuff from around eastern Europe.

As for games, I don't play the mainstream vidya. As a person who likes retro, PS2 and DS, I search around for stuff in corner shops and flea markets. I mean I have had a XBOX 360 but I don't use it anymore and I'll sell it and my games soon probably.

Unfortunately I don't always have the necessary funds to forgo shopping at some of the large chains, but I do try to buy locally whenever I can. A farmer's market has recently opened up in my area every Sunday so I usually get all my fruits and vegetables there, and sometimes meat if they have any. Prices are almost always lower than what I find in grocery stores but there's a much narrower selection. There are almost no grain products besides bread, which means I need to go to other stores for things like rice, flour, and beans.

As for video games, I don't have much of a problem because my computer can run any recent games without nearly melting. I suppose it's both a blessing and a curse.

Not exactly in terms of buying, but if I hate a specific company I won't do business with them at all.

I near make a point not to buy any ecological(organic) groceries. I want the taste, not paying for nothing else. But I've got to say, if you can find free-range eggs somewhere, that's stellar. Not the branding bullshit, where they poke some holes in the roof and call it outdoors, but the ones that actually get to eat some damn grass and have yolks so yellow they'll sear your eyes. That's the stuff. And eggs go with everything.

Is it privilege or some sort of misplaced sense of ego that we turn shopping into a moral issue? Are we trying to zero some cosmic karma scale?

Continue to make choices that have a positive net-boost on your sense of self-worth, please, every small choice makes a difference, but publicizing it just turns it all into a cheap charade.

This is an anonymous board, so it's not really "publicizing" anything to post here.

Meh. "We are Anonymous, we are legion, expecto patronum, etc, etc." I trust peoples' motives a lot more if they're not drawing attention to themselves. At worst, you know they're doing it for their own satisfaction.
