This is kind of a longshot message in a bottle but...
Years ago, someone on this site's IRC (might have been back when we were called YKKARIA) recommended The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, which I proceeded to put on my Kindle... Well, it's been years, and I still haven't read it... However, looking it up, I've realised that I've read the graphic novel version in elementary school!! I might also have read the novel (or seen a TV adaptation), less sure about that. I've read a bunch of Poirots in middle school that I simply don't remember.

Only channel where I post regularly. Most channels feel like everyone's been there for 200 years, it's too hard getting into. Well tbh that one also feels a bit like that, but without a nick I don't mind.

Does anyone know of a good irc client for android?

RevolutionIRC is the only client I ever use for android.

What is the irc chat for this site? there is a link on the front page but it seems blank...
17 Name: Anonymous : 2022-10-29 04:18
what is the irc clients you guys use? ive been trying to get into irc in general but embarrassingly mostly use that pesterchum app that was made to be a homestuck replica

i love the sheer amount of skinning customization but i know all that java script gets called "bloat" by people in these circles but i got this deep into computer sciences because of my artistic craving and gosh hexchat just dosnt have the shapes and colors i desire..

#baot on irc.rizon.net

You can use TheLounge if you want. It's a web client you run, and it supports custom CSS themes

Are there actually channels on Rizon that's not just left to shitposting and nonsensical babble? Looking for something more mature there.

What's your definition of mature? Most of the places I'm in have some level of banter, and if I'm not actively trying to get advice on some technical topic, I like hanging out in places that are fun

I'd like to find a group to join to work towards goals over the internet.

I no longer use IRC but for the longest time I used Weechat on a Raspberry Pi via SSH.
It takes a while to set up but it's amazing and you can configure every single thing about it exactly how you want. During the last year I'm pretty sure that I went on IRC for the pleasure of using the software rather than what was on IRC.

What goals are you struggling to complete on your own?

Sorry I only check this site every now and then.
Basically I no longer needed to ask questions about Linux software. I used IRC mostly for the Freenode channels (and later Libera after Freenode imploded) where you could ask for help. I got to a point where I could figure out things myself for the level of use I needed (very basic, I'm no programmer).
I would have loved to use IRC for actual hobby-related chat, but as you will see if you get on IRC yourself, all that is left outside of Freenode is weird sex chats and piracy.

there are a handful of interesting places to be but for the most part you're right

Do people actually still use IRC?
I tried using it yesterday, joined a server and there were no new messages even though the members were many online people there.

It's hard to say. Same experience, tapped out.

Most people idle. If you stick around long enough you'll usually see some chatter, but most people don't stick around for long enough

Discord essentially killed it off around 2016 or thereabouts. There are still some networks around and people still use it for software/tech stuff (Libera et al) but on the whole it's a ghost town now.

I remember reading it was used in the warez scene a lot because you could actually share files with it. Especially anime/manga and the scanlation teams used IRC a lot.
Is that still a thing?
32 Name: Anonymous : 2022-12-30 12:59
>>31
In the early days of scanlation you pretty much had to go to the group's IRC channel to get chapters, yeah. Later on many groups provided downloads through their websites, but still used IRC as well. I vaguely remember places like #gotlurk...

The active scanlation groups that are still around seem to use Discord now.
