Life and such.

Warm weather with some showers moved in to my area recently.

It felt as the winter would never end. Now that the good part of the year is upon us, what do you guys plan on doing? So much to do, so little time...I've never been as ecstatic about the possibilities of life.

Indeed, this winter was very long. It's so satisfying to finally see all the flowers popping up again and to hear the birds whistling in the trees with the freshest green.

I haven't got much concrete plans for this summer, but I think it might be time to look for a job. I hope I can find something that isn't just physical labour.

The crickets too, my god how I missed their chirping.

Something about warm summer nights make everything seem so nostalgic and as if it's all going to be alright.

It was cold today in the morning which is weird for a California summer. It got warmer at noon and now it's hot. I actually prefer the winter over any other season.

I'm going to (hopefully) get a job at a store called Tokyo Music soon. It sells music and Japanese nerd stuff. I usually go for the music since it's the only place that has old dub records like stuff by Scientist and Prince Jammy. It also has really obscure independent artists which are always fun to discover. I'll be working morning till noon, so most of my day is going to be free. Even when I'm there I'll probably just be playing grand strategy games on my laptop since there won't be many customers coming that early. Afterwards I'll go swimming.

>>3
For me it's the opposite. It's the cold winter nights that give me that feeling.

I really like the Scientist!

I like to lie in the hammock and read during the summer. Unfortunately it has been pretty cool here so I might have to wait a little while.

Showers have been the norm here lately. I keep riding my bike anyway though. So nice to ride along the trail every morning on my way to work. Can't wait for summer vacation time.

I had such a feel-good day. I rode my bike almost 20 miles to the city. All the while I had Escala and a vocaloid producer called “whoo” playing in my ears. Green trees and plant-life against azure skies and a wonderful breeze the whole way. I saw a flatscreen HDMI monitor on side of the road for free! I’m going to give it to my sister. After I saw a turtle trying to cross the road. I picked it up and carried it the rest of the way so it would not get run over.

In town I saw my therapist and had a good session with good advice. After I went to a local food market and got spinach, lettuce, and break. Also I decided to try something new and bought a seaweed bar. And the cashier filled up my water bottle for me, which I thought was really nice of her!
I later sat on a park bench and just let the wind blow over me and drank water for a while. Now I’m sitting at a big table in a large library on my netbook!I had such a feel-good day. Last night I got bored so I started driving around at 2 am. It was eerie. There were tons of lights on, but there wasn't a single soul out in the streets. I had on The Night by Morphine which was the perfect album for it.

The sky was a stark blue and the sun was beaming in my face. Only the horizon was widely littered with tiny clouds. It's safe to assume that they were so tiny because they were very far away. Let me explain to you why that's amazing.

Everyone experiences the world in their own little snowglobe. You can stand in an open field and your view will be limited to whatever objects will be standing in the distance. If you look over the ocean, you will be limited by the curvature of the earth. With this in mind, you can imagine a perimeter of your observable world. I like to think of that circle as a sphere, because there's rarely any noticable depth in the sky above you.

What makes the little clouds so amazing was that they broke my snowglobe. The clouds were much farther than the towns in the distance and they made my world feel much larger. My strides felt bigger and my actions more important. I had a great run as this bigger man.

That sounds really cute! Could you upload a photo to the photoboard?

Yesterday I woke up around 1:00PM and studied Hiragana. Then went outside from some archery practice. It was so nice out I brought out a blanket, a pillow, and some tea and sat in the sun to read my friends linguistics textbook. Got sunburned. Then I drove my scooter to the river for a swim. There was a bunch of kids there on the other side of the river. One kid was sitting in a tree over the river and was being made fun of for not wanting to go in the water because he saw a snapping turtle. I sat down next to him and told him the snapping turtles don't come after humans unless you hurt them, and that even then he does not have to go in the water if he does not want to, that it was his choice. I got him to smile and I jumped out of the tree and into the river for more swimming. After swimming back to the other side I got on my scooter and went home. Had a small dinner and went out for a run. And I ran longer than I have yet this summer! When I got back to my room I saw there was an email from my best friend saying she felt suicidal and did not know what to do. I spent until 3:00AM on a video call with her over XMPP talking her through it and making her feel better.

Today I drove to the bank and got a letter that said my medical services will be paid in full. Takes a big dark shadow out of my mind. I hate anything that has to do with money. It scares me. I also went to the bank and deposited my first paycheck of the summer.
Driving around on my scooter is pretty easy now. I've quickly gotten used to it and I can drive it pretty damn well. I'm glad there are no cops around here to catch me piloting an unregistered, uninspected, and unlicensed vihicle down the road at 55MPH.
Tonight I have the house to myself. I went outside with nothing but my boxers, socks, glasses, and my solar powered flashlight. I took off my glasses and looked at the stars. The black sky is clear as glass and the stars shine like raindrops in a sunbeam. I find it hard to keep balance when I'm looking straight up. I stumbled around my yard not breaking eye contact with the universe above me until my neck became sore and pinched. Living is bleak here, but I do love the forest. One of the things I will miss most when I move to the city in September is being able to look up at night and see the stars. I will miss these stars.

So I went back home at my parents house last weekend for some family related business. I was in the bathroom taking a leak and I noticed this peculiar design on the wall there. Now normally the walls look like some 2 colored mottled scribbles everywhere, but this time it was different. I noticed some kind of horse or fawn or something. I even took a picture of it after I was done with my business in there. Mind you, I've lived in that house for 19 years and not once did I notice this. I tried searching for any other hidden picture in there with no luck. Here's the picture I took, what do you guys think? Also, sorry for the very bad picture quality, I took it with a phone that is nearly 6 years old.

I've been sick most of today. But before it got dark I took a jaunt to the woods with a sword and small flashligh.
There's a small clearing near a small stream where I've set up a base camp or rest stop of sorts. The recent rain has made ferns grow up everywhere overnight. I gathered some rocks and I started to damn work on building up the stream, but it started to get dark. Even in a forest I know so well I can loose my way at night. Once during winter this happened to me. I had to wait for hours until I heard cars motor from a far off highway. I used the sound to orientate myself and get back home.

I went to a nearby park which I hadn't previously known about. Two events which occurred in that trip:
1. The park is surrounded by a fence. When leaving I startled a dear. In its panic it ran into the fence twice trying to escape, before finally finding a way around it. Poor thing.
2. On the way back, I saw a police car with sirens approach. It pulled over next to me, the officer came out and asked to see my hands and if I had a gun. After patting me down and such he explained that someone apparently mistook the Kindle I was carrying as a gun and called in. Surprisingly, I wasn't really worried or scared, even though that's in my temperament, just nervous and embarrassed. We both were, I guess. It was kind of funny in retrospect.

I put a blue tinted lightbulb in my room's light socket and it's so strange to have my room cast in a light blue instead of yellow. I'm hoping it subconsciously improves my mood, but it might prove to be too strange!

I've had three family members staying at my house for weeks, and now apparently I'm being joined by two more children and two dogs. I do love my family but it's really getting tiring never having a moment to myself. I also can't smoke weed unless everyone is gone from the house, which is more of a bother than you might imagine (I normally indulge around 4-5 times every day, and I'd say I'm dependent on some level).

Today I was dozing off in the garden when it suddenly started raining. It was a slight drizzle and I didn't feel like moving. The raindrops were little surprises on my skin and after a while I could smell the wet earth through my blanket. The sky let up after a while and the winds were so soft and gentle. They were like the finest sheets floating over my skin.

You should really stay out when it starts raining.

The other day I had the chance to sit with my sister on a small dock next to a lake. It was sunny but cool. My favorite insect, dragonflies, were everywhere. We saw a small fish jump out of the water. A large red dragonfly land on my knee. We both dared not breath as we very slowly took out cameras to take photos with. My sister saw some milkweed float by me. She did not know what it was. I saw some milkweed plants with pods still on them, I brought her to the plants and told her to bring me a small sharp rock. She did as asked and I slowly cut the pod open for her to see the fluffy seedings. Told that once the pod grew enought to open, the sun would dry out the seeds fluffy part, and the wind would blow them out and away from the pod. Once the seeds landed in good enough soild, they would take root and grow into another milkweed plant. She said "Oh." and the fell quiet. I could not tell if she was bored or thinking deeply about what I had said. I asked her to help me spread the seeds of the pod we opened. Most fell to the ground around our feet but what ones took to the breeze she watched quietly.
After that we laid down on the dock and let our heads dangle over the water. There on a floating branch we saw snails using the branch as a boat. The smallest snails we have ever seen. They were smaller than my pinky nail. I told my sister I did not even know snails could get that small. She became really excied when she picked one up and it came out of its shell to crawl around on her finger. It was a really good day.

Today I'm staying in. I considered biking to the cathedral to find some peace and solace. I'm supposed to be atheist but recently I've been questioning what I even believe. I'm not looking for Jesus Christ, I'm just looking for something outside of myself. I don't know what that is. I think being raised within the Christian institution means that I would naturally look to churches for inspiration, but I'm also reading the Bhagavad Gita and have been listening to Buddhist lectures. I don't know what to think.

I'm an atheist, I usually think of the physical universe and my planet as what is being "outside myself". I love my planet and my universe and I love being alive. Buddhism is my favorite religion. I don't believe any of their superstitions of course, but a lot of their tenants are basically guideline on how to live a good, peaceful life.

Isn't Buddhism more about destroying the notion that the physical universe is "outside of ourselves"? I think it tries to emphasise a fundamental unity. I find this comforting to a certain extent; trivial problems melt away. However it's difficult to find. It's like trying to clasp a handful of water - the more vigorously you try to grasp it, only the faster it slips from your hands. I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Today I walk to one of my classes on a path that takes me past an apple tree. It is a breezy and overcast day. On the apple tree I saw a raven. I froze, then crouched to watch it. Once it saw I had stopped moving it scooted sideways down the branch, then cocked it's head at an apple.
It smashed it's beak humorously into the apple making fresh applesauce splatter onto the sidewalk below it. The raven yanked it's head back and looked insulted. Then smashed it's beak into the apple again, this time yanking out a good chunk of apple meat, which it then swallowed. It was really cool to watch.
Eventually a passing person scared the raven off. I was glad to have had the chance to watch that.

My university lectures start tomorrow. The university education is done in English here, and my skills weren't satisfactory for academy so this first year is just going to be English study. I'm used to writing on internet but talking in this foreign language in real life is still very awkward for me. I'm already bad enough at adapting to a new social group using the very language I've been using for my whole life. During the class introduction last week, the only person whose voice shivered was me. This is such a hassle, to begin with English pronunciation is just too different and listening to Chinese cartoons all the damn time for years rather than American live action certainly didn't help. It's not that I'm hoping for an embarrassment-free experience, I just hope I won't embarrass myself too much.

This morning I had a weird train experience.

I took a different route than usual to extend my conversation with a friend and when we parted I found an old train in the platform I expected to be empty. One quick glance on the boards revealed that it was running late and that I could take it to my destination without having to wait for another 15 minutes, so I quickly boarded and found a seat in a nearly empty wagon. The interior of the wagon surprised me. It was brightly yellow with a dark wooden ceiling and all the fabrics had a warm tint as if they were dipped in caramel. Pairs of people were softly murmuring to each other and single riders looked distinguished with a timeless rest decorating their faces. The only audible conversation was that between a mother and a child, both speaking enthusiastically in a foreign language. The scenery outside was new to me and for ten minutes I felt like I was on a faraway train where nobody knew me and I knew nobody, but everything was alright.

When I left the train and stepped into the suppressed blue of the morning I heard a clarinet in the distance.

The following did not come from me, but it happened to my friend, which they sent over email to me.

When I was walking home, I had forgotten my umbrella so I was walking soaked to the nearest department store to buy a cheap replacement for the rest of my 40-ish minute walk / train commute home. Much to my surprise an umbrella appeared over my head and there was an old lady behind me smiling sweetly. I insisted I was okay, just crossing the street, but she refused to leave. "I have my hat, you have nothing." I apologized profusely for the inconvenience and we started small talk about the typhoon. Selfless Japanese people are selfless.

I've just moved to London and started a job straight after graduating. I'm working long hours and it's an office job that isn't just a "dull nine to five." It requires that I be pro-active and energetic and I just don't have it in me. My financial situation requires me to take this job, but if I didn't have so much debt I would be doing something less stable. I wanted to volunteer in a Buddhist centre. Ultimately, I don't know what will make me happy. I've been here two weeks and I already want to leave. Is that acceptable or am I being a little princess?

Congratulations. You are the number of Pokemon there were by the end of the second generation.

What makes him your "kind of friend" when you've known him for three years? What's changed of late about him?
Also don't you think you should do a little recon first? Find out about his dating history, see if any of them were male. Ask around about his opinions about queer-ness in general. Ask your other friends if they think he's gay for any real reasons, or if they are just joking.

In other news, my Thinkpad X60 came in today! I love getting mail. And Friday I have a second date with a guy I went out with yesterday. He's really cool and I hope it goes well.

Well um I have really known him for four years, and we did start off as friends, but when I came out he got really homophobic and we didn't talk for for a year. He apologized the end of that year, so I just don't count the time before his apology, but we never really became friends again. I'm not really sure what's changed, I think it may be because I've been talking to him a lot more recently. I have done a lot of recon, though. He's never seriously dated anyone, but they were all girls. My friends think he's gay because he "never talks about any girls he likes," so that's not a really valid reason.

I hope your date goes well, too!

I'm not very excited for snow, besides its aesthetic qualities... But then, if there's a season I prefer, it's spring and autumn, early autumn the most.

The winter has one redeeming quality, however - while the businesses are still open in the early evening, nobody ever bothers going outside. Being able to wander across town, lost in thought and not having to worry about the people around you is pleasant.

I used to live in the countryside, and I loved to walk around town at night. No one around. It was really relaxing. I love the city, but there always are people out; drunk or scary people, sometimes. Well, I do appreciate ordering a cocktail in a beautiful bar and neighbourhood and going back home. There's something relaxing about the city that neither my flat nor the countryside can provide.
269 Name: Anonymous : 2013-11-21 17:07

Countryside, huh? That must have been really nice, when I visited the parts where my grandparents lived it was all just a road branching off from one of the more important ones and going on for 30 kilometers until you had a town and the road went back for another fifteen to get back to the city it started from, with a lone house or two around the sides. Was kind of fun driving through there, especially as my uncle had been able to name every household and members thereof, though he wasn't very inclined to share what he thought of them for some reason. I don't think these were unkind things, however. Maybe it was a form of courtesy?

The city sure is nice, too! I mean, you don't exactly get the peace and quiet over there but it's filled to the brim with... stuff. I lived in a relatively small one in comparison, around a million people but you were able to not go further than three hundred meters and you had some sort of novelty establishment in front of your eyes. I can only guess that the relaxing thing you found about it was the anonymity? It's a pretty great thing really, you can dress in whichever way you want whilst in the smaller towns you need to be careful of what you do since there's going to be gossip about you everywhere. It's mostly about the mentalities, I think. Cities tend to be more liberal in general.

Can you tell me anything about the cocktails you enjoy, or am I going too far~?

On a walk through my city today I saw some green garb on a guardrail. Upon picking it up I found it to be an almost raw wool 80's era army/military sweater. There is one small hole in the lower back. It has nylon padding on the shoulders and the elbows. I looked around. I did not see anyone around. Who left it hanging here all neat like that?
I took it for myself. I brought it home, gave it a good wash, and now I am wearing it for the first time. This thing is hot! Most people were wearing parkas and overcoats today but this sweater is so warm it's really more than I need all by itself. I like it a lot. It fits me okay. A little tight around the neck. Otherwise it's a nice find.

It was small enough to guarantee quiet walks at night, but I actually lived in a town with 7000 inhabitants. As a former suburban, calling that town the countryside is a reflection of my boredom more than of reality. That said, my grandparents do live in the countryside, which is as you describe. My grandmother would gossip however much you want about other households, though. That's the kind of person I wouldn't confide in! Your grandfather probably just has discretion.

The city is where everyone and everything is. It's filled with stuff. I went to the capital for an exam of sorts, and I could meet up with 4 people from the Internet. If you try a little, you meet tons of people in the city, and you're bound to find at least a few you to get along with. Though anonymity is nice, what I like most is the atmosphere, the beautiful stores and buildings. In the countryside you can't find too many fancy streets and all that. I enjoy a classic Martini.

This is me today.

I've gone home for thanksgiving. I took a peaceful bus ride to a station near our capitol. It snowed the hole way. I'm typing this from the computer I built for my mom and
sister. One of my moms friends brought me almost the rest of the way home. When we got to the start of my long dirt road into the forest I told her to let me out and that I'd walk the rest of the way home. I did not want her little car on my road with all
the snow and ice.

Walking home at night, on that long dirt road of mine. I must have done
it a million times over the years. During winter it's really quite beautiful. I stopped
walking a few times and listened. Silence. Total. Complete. Silence. I'd
fogotten about it. At university there's always some noise of some kind.
Here, even when the animals stir, the snow eats the sound.

The snowy road makes a line in front of me which I follow. Anything that
is not road is pitch dead 100 percent black. That's the trees. Above
that is the sky. Also black. But...a different kind. The dead black
treeline stands out against it like ink on paper somehow. Yet both the sky and
trees are very black.

For first time ever something changed here. Someone else who lives on
the road sold some of their land to loggers. Who clearcut the whole
thing. There's this one area next to my road now that's just this huge
open clearing, the entire treeline in that area is different now. It was
so jarring to look at!!! In the morning I will go to have a better look.

On my commute a few days ago I passed a wheat field. This field was harvested in late autumn I guess, and there are small stalks, a foot and a half high, growing back up. That morning, a flock of birds had lit on the field. One bird on each stalk. I wanted to stop and take a photograph but I probably would have just scared them off.
On my commute a different few days ago, it was pretty foggy. As I approached the bridge, the sign indicating that there's traffic information on the transportation department's AM radio station was blinking, and I decided to turn it on, even though I knew it would just tell me that it was foggy and drivers should exercise caution on the bridge. The station was weak with regular interruptions from other stations and the repeating tape of the announcer was distant and monotone. I left it on the entire trip.
Driving is only part of my life that interests me right now. There's something really special about being between places.

The Morning the city was foggy and sleepy. It all looked and felt so mysterious. You could hear and see cars and people and headlights, but each only for a moment as they passed quickly in and out of the fogg.

I got to take part in a life drawing class today, it's something I've been wanting to do for ages and I can finally do it on a regular basis. It wasn't weird at all, I guess I'm used to drawing nude people anyway so I didn't really care. It was a great atmosphere to work in, at home I get so distracted by the internet and things but there I happily drew for hours straight. Next week is a single long pose which might test my patience but I need to get out of my comfort zone and seriously render something instead of doing line drawings all the time. Next week I'm going to try get there not-late and maybe even talk to some grills.

I noticed the other day that it was pretty light out when I was coming home, it's been pitch black for ages so hopefully the winter will sod off soon.

Today I got to sit and eat with the Japanese kids at my uni. We talked for a long time about Japanese and English words for political subjects, food, and animals. There was also a girl from China who informed us that it's pretty much normal for Chinese to eat damn near anything. Dog, cat, snake, bats, owls, bears. Bear is exspensive though. I told her one one of my favorite animals was a pangolin. She responded by showing me a photo of pangolin soup.
They also invited me to later eat okonomiyaki with bacon, cabbage, and some kind of Japanese sauce. We talked about all kinds of English things, school, laws, crime, Pokemon. For some reason they were *amazed* by a 3DS, and used mine to take 3D pictures of each other. I asked "This comes from YOUR country, why are you so amazed by it?" They just said none of them had seen one before. Hunh.
I had a lot of fun and I got to learn a little Japanese. It was snowing when I left their dorms to go back to mine.
This was a nice night.

This morning, I woke up early, threw open my window, and thought to myself for the first time in a long while that I shouldn't be so defeatist, that I still can seize happiness in my circumstances and move on with my life if I just stop assuming the worst of everything. All this, two seconds before I checked my email and found out that my counselor's advice to drop the single credit (required) online fitness course from my schedule put me exactly one credit below the requirement for being a fulltime student. Told me that it's always better to take it in the spring, so I can join a physical class that meets and jogs. Part time tuition is a little less, but I just got slammed with a thousand dollar bill to basically recall a certain percentage of my financial aid now that I'm part time. This is coming in the middle of the term, no hope of adjusting my schedule.

I was already having money trouble paying for school, and the family I have left were refusing to help me there. I just don't know what to do, I guess. Coming here and escaping my family and working myself to get good grades and a shitty job weren't enough, and now I just feel like I'm going to end up with nowhere to go and a lap full of student loans. And I have nobody to blame but myself. I know this thread is usually for happy hopeful life sharing, but I really need to say something, somewhere, anonymously, to anyone.

Yesterday, I visited a friend that I haven't talked to or seen in a year and a half. Although my stay was very short, I felt like we had so much to talk about. So much has changed since we last met; some of our friends are overseas, some are busy working, some play games all day, and one even got all four of his wisdom teeth pulled out. He looked really swollen and painful. Time really does fly by. It makes me wonder how my old classmates from 3rd grade are doing, and what kind of people we will all become in the next few years. I hope I change for the better.

360 Name: Anonymous : 2014-03-17 07:03
>>359
Pretty alright. Just make sure you know where the words start and end, looking out for particles and whatnot. Some sentences might sound weird, but you'll get the hang of separating words in due time. Once you do, you'll have to start picking up the common words and start speeding through sentences. How much Japanese do you know? You might find it easy if you know basic structuring with moderate help from the dictionary. If you're just learning, you should write up a big txt full of words, or maybe even sentences that are quite new or challenging for you. Shove that into your browser and have Rikai-kun at hand. Just don't rush into kanji if you don't have kanji to work on, such as proper text. Many beginners who dive straight into kanji may have trouble with onyomi and kunyomi, so be wary of which one you're typing.

Other easy tools are Kabuto, Obenkyo and Colordict for Android.

I'm tempted to do the same thing, but I might get bored of the linguistic aspect and play something else.

Anon from above who whined about tuition woes and the like. Post 313? Yeah.

The bad news is, I basically went despondent in every part of my life other than burying myself in schoolwork. My ability to sleep and appetite disappeared on their own. I started planning for the worst, for my inability to do anything but keep my head down and ignore my own problems.

The good news is, after a good while of this pushing me to the brink, I was desperate enough to force myself to call anybody who would listen and beg them to hold me accountable to getting help. Sign up for an appointment with a therapist on campus or something, and have them to call and make sure I don't back out. Which is what I did. And a few sessions later, life is still shitty, but I'm in sight of a few key letters being written and my being able to get on medication and kind of move on with my life? My problems still feel like a big amorphous wall of bullshit that I can't even start to imagine climbing, and the Important Pills I'm looking forward to aren't really going to be more than the first step of a very difficult journey, but I definitely feel really good about having forced myself to find a professional and spill my guts and get started on fixing things that have haunted me my entire life. All covered by the tuition I'm dying to pay, too, which is nice.

So I'm here now, a few public breakdowns later. On spring break. Raising my GPA bit by bit, working myself hard at my job, putting my feelers out for work this summer to help cover the tuition deficit while I'm off. This post is more than a bit long, and nobody really cares, but this thread is the place I tossed out a few too many words when everything started to really tumble, and I guess it feels nice to do the same now that things have flipped, if you'll pardon my indulgence.

Thanks, cafe.

To continue. Now I've been in Hong Kong for six weeks. It makes me feel very disconnected from the life I knew; it's difficult to imagine that peoples' lives continued when I left. People still get up, have breakfast, brush their teeth, and go to work. Just seven hours behind me.

One thing about Hong Kong I'm certain you guys would love is the rainstorms. It's entering into rainy season now, with the biggest thunderstorms I've ever seen occurring once every two or three days. Might as well call it strobe lightning. Perhaps you get a similar thing in the correct areas of the US, but for a small UK bumpkin like me, it's overwhelmingly beautiful and powerful.

Actually, I'm planning on selling my entire Pokemon TCG collection. They're mostly from the Delta series, so they're rather old, but they still have that new card smell. Nobody uses them anymore, but I've amassed quite a bit. It feels weird to give out a part of the transition to adulthood.
439 Name: Anonymous : 2014-05-26 23:27

My god, why?? Why not play with them?
440 Name: Anonymous : 2014-05-27 04:27
>>439
For one thing, I have nobody to play with. Pokemon here is a game and a distant memory for kids. The entire thing has been a bad bunch of memories for me, and remembering them recently made me want to get rid of it all. While I would like to play again, I think it would be best for me to get rid of them. While I understand how you feel, I think that it's time for me to move on. It's just sitting in a large duffel bag with some YuGiOh and DuelMasters. In fact, I just remembered that I have a few badges. I think I have 4 badges: Boulder, Cascade, Thunder and Rainbow. I have a pin or two from the Crystal Defender's release, too. I'll dig it up on Thursday and see what I can find.
441 Name: Anonymous : 2014-05-27 11:29
>>440
Reminds me of a moment I experienced when I dropped by a local card store.

There was a TCG tournament for the game and someone brought up an older Pokemon in conversation. One of the kids didn't know this Pokemon and said something about not being around back then to know it. And I think he won regionals in our area, which is a fairly large city. It made me feel really old.

It will be easier on you if you consider that those cards aren't viable in the ever-changing metagame with each new set coming out every few months. And that, letting go of the past, it's a liberating thing. To the new days...
442 Name: Anonymous : 2014-05-27 18:27
>>440

Well that's fair. There's pretty big community where I live. With the video games I'm third best trainer in the area. With the TCG I'm average.

Question about the badges, can I buy them from you? 100% serious.

444 Name: Anonymous : 2014-05-28 01:45
>>441
I suppose so. Although the thing is that I've been throwing every part of the past away, ranging from friends, consoles with bad memories, some parts of my family and whatnot, but that's a story for another day. I know that these cards are no longer usable now. I was really heartbroken to find out that I couldn't use them anymore when they released the new sets. Oh well, c'est la vie, I suppose.

>>442
Well that's good! I miss playing pokemon. I used to play Sapphire until I dropped my GBA by accident. Dropping it somehow knocked the battery out and then back in, corrupting my data. That was a very long time ago, and I can't remember what happened to my GBA. The only console I will never let go of is my PSP.

On the note of badges. I'll have to find them first. I think they're pins. I'll be glad to give them to you. No, don't worry about the money. My only concern is that since they're made of some metal(possibly stainless), and my other concern is if you're in the US. They might confiscate it or something. I would be more than happy to give it to you.

Recently I've been wanting to relax outside with a cup of hot chocolate, watching the clouds run by and forgetting everything else. I want to feel the sun warm my feet, feel the calm wind on my face and watch grass sway. I haven't done it in such a long time. I haven't relaxed in such a long time. I want to hear the grass mingle and the birds chirp, but all I hear outside are cars and people. What a strange feeling.

Part of me wants to be productive and use up all of my time, but another part of me wants to relax and let the world do its wonders. I haven't done any art in quite a while, and I can feel it being pent up inside. The only problem I see is that I get lazy every time I think of doing anything.

Oh well. I guess I'll watch the sunrise or something and get back to my usual routine.

>>487 My apologies for deviating; you mentioned hot chocolate. Do you have a recipe you would share, if it is not cacao in warm milk?
490 Name: Anonymous : 2014-07-16 20:42
>>489
That actually depends on the kind of powder you use. Some have sugar mixed in the cocoa, some don't. I can't remember what brand it was, but they used to have some sugar mixed into their drinking chocolate; now they don't.

The mix of sugar and cocoa depends on your taste, the quality of the cocoa and if sugar is already mixed in the cocoa. Another factor is milk. Different countries have different tastes, textures and qualities of milk! So it all depends on where and who you are! I'd say just keep experimenting until you get what you like.

The milk I have is thick, creamy and full, and the chocolate no longer has sugar. I heat up a cup of milk until it gets hot, 3 heaping teaspoons full of chocolate and 1 teaspoon of sugar are mixed into another cup and the milk is slowly added while being mixed. If you can, shake the cup with sugar and chocolate(covered of course) so that lumps don't form as much.

The amount of sugar I put in depends on my mood. Come to think of it, I always put a lot of sugar in.
491 Name: Anonymous : 2014-07-16 20:45
>>489
Oh and I forgot to mention. If you're feeling really adventurous, get the milk really hot and mix in a chocolate spread. I do that with oatmeal.

I have always harbored negative feelings towards the city I live in. Ugly and disorganized people overpopulating a maze of ugly and disorganized buildings, that's what I thought. Considering it is supposedly a bastion of civilization where many cultural achievements of humanity took place, and how it is constantly praised by practically everyone in my country, I was even more bitter towards it.

However, for the past year my opinions slighly changed. Not completely, no, I still think it's an ugly city. But I started to see the beautiful sides of it, which were once unknown to me. Perhaps in the past I isolated myself too much to actually go, explore and see. What changed my perspective was starting university. The campus is simply breathtaking, from the masterfully crafted buildings to the pleasantness of the surrounding scenery. I could no longer remain ignorant to the beauties of this city which has been inspiring artist for centuries.

I took a photo of the entrance to the campus.

If that is San Francisco, I agree with you a thousand percent. I myself live in the Bay Area, and I cannot stand living in such an ugly, polluted urban area with loud people.

Because of this, I've always dreamed of living in a rural area in some other country such as Japan. The countryside out there is absolutely gorgeous and the villagers are such amazing human beings. Just being in an open area full of nature with fresh air and true neighbors sounds like such a fun simple life. This anime called "Non non Biyori" gives quite a large spoonful of life in the country. It's quite beautiful, a must watch for anyone.

On the way home there are some trees overhanging the utility lines and the road. They're trimmed so they don't damage the lines, but once they're above the lines they can grow free. Last night I stayed outside on my campus sipping tea and listening to music students practice. From one room was a trumpet, another was piano, another was drums. I've been commuting by train for the past month, an hour or more each way every day. Today I saw a man reading a really thick volume of manga on the train. Now that I think of it, it may have been western comics, but at the time that possibility didn't occur to me.

I usually sit in the quiet car, but sometimes I end up in a really talkative car. I think of it as the Cheers car, since everyone knows everyone else's name in that car. Except for me. I wonder how they all got to know each other.

Slow day at the office, dry weather outside. Hot haze from asphalt baked by the ferocious sunlight, marred by the occasional passenger aircraft taking off and landing. A distinct "government issued" blue/grey tinted helicopter just finished testing in aircraft maintenance hangar, hot white smoke coming out of the twin turboprop engine exhaust. Oil leak perhaps? Anyway, the police will have one less helicopter to fly today, easy day for the pilot I guess...

Most of us want to be a pilot when we are little. That or an astronaut or president... And most of us, including me, gave up on those dream, caught with reality.
...really...

...Being this close to those metal flying machines, sometimes working on one, but never really fly one of those is just like looking an expensive toys on a display, glued eyes, drooling at it... but ultimately never own it...

Eh, had my lunch delivered, guess I have to eat those as dinner today...

... eat well, rest well, i guess it's fine...

Just watched episode 11 of Non Non Biyori. This and Nichijou are seriously the best anime I've watched this decade. Words cannot describe how unbelievably soothing Non Non Biyori is.

Every time I watch it, I can't help but ponder about how much I wish I lived in a peaceful remote town surrounded by friendly villager buddies like in the show. I'm so happy there's going to be a second season but I'm also very sad that there isn't an official English translation of the manga yet. There is a fan-made one online but it would be really nice if I could have the physical book so I can lay down and read it on my bed or wherever. Now, off to do algebra homework...

Also, the creator's twitter account has some interesting stuff:

I love Non Non Biyori. It caught me off guard how much I loved it. I'd put it in my top favourite anime, and I'm a really picky person. I love it because it doesn't have stupid drama, it's just kids living and having fun in the middle of nowhere, like how I grew up.

NAILED IT! Kind of tired of shows with emo, dramatic protagonists. Which is why slice of life has recently became my favorite genre of all time. I also grew up like you did. Me as well as all the kids that lived in my neighborhood were all friends with each other and we would all hang out at my place and play video games or play hide-and-seek tag outside. Unfortunately, my neighborhood is dead now and everyone either moved or grew up. But this show always reminds me of those fun, simple times with my old friends.

Today I decided to explore a little bit of the train station on a whim. There was a girl sitting alone on the marble floor of the balcony overlooking the great hall. She was sitting with her back against the railing, playing with her phone. She smiled at me briefly as I came up the stairs. I can understand why she chose that spot. The great hall takes all the sounds of people walking and talking, swirls them up into the cavernous ceiling, and melds them into a comforting, low murmur. It makes the perfect background noise. I've even seen a person meditating in the middle of the great hall before.

I decided not to approach her and break the solitude she had found on the balcony. I took a seat on the lower floor of the hall to do some studying, occasionally glancing up at her; I could just glimpse her between the thick marble balusters. After a while, some workmen on the west side of the hall started up some cacophonous machinery. When I looked up again, she was gone.

That's awful, I'm glad you're OK. Do pedestrians not have right of way where you live?

The roads around here are quiet, but the tourist season approaches and soon they'll be full of unfamiliar drivers at the end of long journeys. It's not so much fun on the road then.

It's very windy where I live at the moment. I went out for a walk yesterday, and the cool wind and bright sunlight over the hills were very refreshing. I'm glad spring is here.

Hmm, were you the anon I talked to about still being around in a decade?

I recommend finishing YKK, I only did the same last month. Before that, I just didn't really want it to end, so I avoided reading the last volume, but Ashinano handled it better than I thought he would and I feel it actually improved the experience. Time accelerates a bit towards the end, but it helps clear up a few points.

No, I only made in time to post the very last reply of that thread and couldn't really participate in the discussion. But I had a smile on my face as I read your conversation with that other anon. I really hope Afternoon Cafe also stays around for a decade. How many years has it been already? Two, or probably three I think.

I heard the ending was one of the strongest points of YKK. But I'm a bit reluctant restarting, as I would like to read it during a less busy time of my life. But then again, maybe it would be a better experience reading a chapter each night after coming home a bit tired. I don't know, I can't decide.

It was raining today, so I decided to put on my waterproofs and walk into town. The sound of raindrops on leaves is nice, anyway! Rain isn't so bad when you're prepared for it.

There's a little footpath connecting my village to the nearby town that I suspect is an ancient way, so I've been trying to connect the dots to see if I can figure out the full route recently. All signs certainly point to it being very old; the ones that stand out are the way it appears to follow the old parish boundaries (usually much older than the actual parish), and that there's a section called Love(r's) Lane. I've stalled on trying to figure it out recently, but a friend has pointed me towards a section that I hadn't walked before, and after following it today I suspect they're right about it being part of the old path. I always enjoy the fact that even today people walk the route the same way they would have thousands of years ago; that only time separates them from the people who would have walked it then.

The guy behind them told me he'd been using Google Maps to check the route, but it wasn't really necessary because the sheep took all the right turns after walking the same route only 2 times before! There were a few adventurous sheep who went exploring every now and then but his dog (who wore a cute reflective vest!) quickly herded them back.

How do you shake an existential crisis?
I can't stop wondering about things that I'll never know the answers to, like why the universe exists, or if what I'm experiencing is real, or what will happen when I die. I wish I could just stop thinking about these things.
665 Name: Anonymous : 2015-05-15 22:14

Well, think of a risk-reward or cost-benefit analysis.
What can you do about X?
The only thing that can be done about X is to worry about X.
Okay, what positive things do you get out of worrying about X?
None.
Negative things?
Yes.
What are they?
Existential crisis.
So we have established that the only thing you can do about X is that one can can worry about X. And worrying about X causes the negative event 'existential crisis'. Therefore, you should not preform that action. But that does not really help I guess 'cause all I'm telling you to do is to stop doing it. Thinking like that helped me a lot, though.

Free will doesn't exist. When making "choices" our brain just algorithmically evaluates things. We are biological machines and have no say in what actually happens. Life is an illusion. Free will doesn't exist. The universe is meaningless.

>>669
I've never got this viewpoint. It only doesn't exist if you sort of "carve out" free will into an entity of it's own, like some sort of random number generator inside your head. What you perceive as free will _is_ the result of those "algorithmic evaluations", but that doesn't mean you're any less of an individual, as those are still your evaluations.

From my bed, I can hear the sounds of this town at night. I hear the propellers of the old airplanes flying overhead, as well as a helicopter every now and then. I can hear the crickets chirping and a dog barking in the distance. I can also hear some birds by the window occasionally peeping. Roosters are always crowing somewhere, either far away or nearby. The fan in my room is slowly revolving, and it rhythmically ticks as it spins. I also hear the sounds of the house settling into itself, periodically creaking, as old homes do. Sometimes I hear branches and leaves outside, but I do not know if it is a person, an animal, or the wind stepping about.

I can also smell the cool night air when the breeze blows the right way.

When making "choices" our brain just algorithmically evaluates things.
That sounds just as much of an illusion. Really, is this "evaluation" process really an algorithm, or is this percieved heuristic just mere apophenia? Consciously taking decisions obviously does follow some sort of organized deterministic weighting process, but is the subconscious (which is really the ultimate answer to these deterministic fixations: "you did it because the subconscious wanted you to") really an "algorithm"? Is irrationality even possible on such a scenario? Maybe its just plain arbitrary, but this isn't compatible with our actions, is it? We don't act irrationaly 24/7, so rationality is inherently autonomous, not dictated or determined. It's even able to trascend current condition, is this not free will?

It's kind of interesting that archery is popular here. Fitting, I guess.

I totally agree. Even my (3 year old) smartphone browser crashes or takes over a minute to load news articles which should be simple but the text itself is loaded via JavaScript or something. I really hate the state of web design today.

Yes. I overwrote the Linux kernel that came with it with a slightly modified one some hacker slapped together. It enables USB_HOST_MODE, meaning with an OTG cable I can plug things into it. I plan to buy an OTG cable and a tiny keyboard that uses little electricity and just type on it, mostly. Mostly. Over Wifi I can ssh to my SDF-eu account in Germany and code and run software and other things from it. I guess that means I'll basically be using it as a tiny, low power, eink laptop. Which I can also read books on.

Today I finally found a fleece to replace my old one!

My old one is a really cheap one I picked up for school, which I ended up wearing continuously for any outdoor activity since then, including accompanying me on every mountain since I started climbing. It has faded from black to a light brown, and developed melted holes along the seams at some point in it's history (??? no idea where they came from). I love it, but by this point people have begun to hound me about replacing it (rightfully so, alas. It was getting a little homeless chic), and I was unable to find them in the store I originally bought it from.

However, I have finally picked up a higher-end replacement for it second hand, which I hope will accompany me for many more mountains!

I too live in a major port and have never seen them, just know about them from talking to crew on the larger ships.

They're generally used further out at sea I think, when the ship is cruising in a straight line for a while. They're winched down on to the deck for storage.

They don't make much of a difference, it's just that even the tiniest extra bit of fuel savings make a difference when you're cruising for months at absolute minimum cost.

I just like things powered by the wind, really!

I think that one of the nicest things about Autumn is being able to experience "morning light" again. Throughout the summer, unless you have to be up very early you normally wake up by the point the sun is high in the sky. As you travel through autumn, the morning shadows and cool air return.

Just a thought, if you live in a port city, you may find looking at an AIS tracker site (like MarineTraffic) interesting! You can see the name/class/cargo of ships, and see where they've been. They're effectively ADS-B transponders (like flightradar24), but for boats.

808 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-05 22:09
>>807

>>792 here! Trust my beginner advice at your own peril!

Picks:
No cost: Make your own out of spring steel (streetsweeper bristles, windshield wiper/bra inserts, hacksaw blades), see in the references below for templates.
For really budget options: KLOM picks, get them wherever (FastTech, DX, Aliexpress) (what I use!).
A better option: Southord, but you'll have to assemble your own kit.

Resources:
The classic, is, of course, The MIT Guide To Lockpicking ( http://www.capricorn.org/~akira/home/lockpick/ ).
Another option would be "Lockpicking: Detail Overkill".
bosnianbill on youtube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2r07NN21vM&index=3&list=PLTSWkYxuSlkXiSBwk3Hvbvx71sg-MH61s ) is an brilliant resource, though doesn't do a huge amount of beginner stuff (though if you prefer video that's a link to the beginner playlist).

The big "organisation" for it is TOOOL ( http://toool.us/ ) though they don't really do much online. The largest community is Lock Picking 101 ( http://www.lockpicking101.com/ ) although I can't speak for how useful it is (very if you're looking to bypass a specific type of lock though) as I've only ever regularly read /r/lockpicking.

You will struggle with tension when you first start, but keep trying and you'll eventually get the hang of it.

I'm alright at raking, but my SPP technique is abysmal. Need to get some slimline picks for the locks here in Europe...

It's a surprisingly useful skill, and picking a challenging lock is very satisfying. You'll never be able to trust your bicycle/motorbike/gate etc to a cheap padlock again, too, so budget for that...

I hope this post is of some help!

Wow cool, the way they're coloured looks like a sort of visualisation of where the water is!
It's a bit weird around here actually, some of the trees are as coloured as yours while others still have summer green colours on them.

A Panasonic GX1 with the kit lens. Just sold my NEX to buy it actually, it's a wee bit more portable than the NEX and smaller sensor doesn't seem to be a limitation. Still getting used to it!

There's some fairly heavy post going on in those pictures though (e.g. pics #1 and #2 were shot seconds apart on the same tree - it's just the blues were heavily desaturated and midtone contrast increased in #1) so I don't know how representative they are of the camera haha!

Ah, Br.E/Am.E confusion. In the UK apple juice refers to the juice pressed from apples, and cider refers to only alcoholic drinks produced from apples.

e.g. Mulled cider is a occasional alternative to mulled wine http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/mulledcider_8851

I'll have to give that suggestion a go though! I've had apple tea before, I guess it's like a sweeter version of that?

I once last year when through and re-did all the markers. There were red circles painted on trees to mark the official path. But they were really old and faded. I bought some bright orange spray paint and went through the path one day re-painting all the old markers. It was fun and I helped out a bit.

I finally got a desktop, it's a little dusty and it's 4 or so years old, but it does the job better than my laptop. I'm starting to love tinkering with it, especially cleaning! The brush head of my dyson vacuum broke because one of the half inch wide rings holding the plastic sprocket in place went into contact with the bearing, melting itself off. The sprocket no longer engages the axle and either sounds like a jet engine or is stuck. I broke the mirror for my figs and I need to get another set. I still need to redo the hair on one of my garage kits and build a scale Tachikoma!

On top of that, I cleaned up my closet but my room is a bit messy!

Weirdly it was my first time shooting a Mosin today! Recoil in prone was painful (though that seems to be the same with all WW2 rifles), but fun to shoot. Shot a bunch of other strange stuff as well, it was a big organised shoot at the range so the members bought some seriously esoteric rifles along (including a shotgun conversion of a Martini Henry and a load of black powder pistols).

In the UK though, Mosins are pretty much the same cost as any other early-20th rifle - so everyone just buys Enfields or K31s instead unless they have a particular interest in early Russian rifles. Don't often see them around.
880 Name: Anonymous : 2015-12-07 05:12
>>879

Yeah, her Mosin left a bruise on my arm that still hurts.

I'd rather a Mosin than either of those rifles though, from what I read about them. Mosins just pack a bigger punch and put fist sized holes in things.
881 Name: Anonymous : 2015-12-07 13:48
>>880
The Mosin won't really pack a larger punch - the cartridges are around the same muzzle energy, so you won't observe any difference in effects. 3600J-ish for 7.62x54R and 7.5 Swiss, .303 Brit slightly lower at around 3400J. K31s and Enfields just have nicer actions - can't pull off a proper mad minute with a Mosin!

.303 and 7.5 Swiss are expensive though, I'm pretty jelly of the cheap tins of surplus Mosin shooters can get. You could get a lot more practice in for the same cost with a Mosin...

The cider I have brewing under the sink is almost done. I added honey to my last batch when it was done fermenting, which brought out the apple flavor and also made it slightly effervescent, as the added sugars started a secondary fermentation phase. I don't have any honey left now, so I might go to the store and buy some.
Do you folks have anything that you like to add to your cider?
I might also try making applejack with some of the finished product. I've never distilled anything before, so freeze distillation might be a good way to start.

Warm here too! It's probably because a historically strong El Nino occurred last year, which has lead to pretty weird (mostly warm and wet but stable) weather patterns for large portions of the Northern Hemisphere. The Arctic Oscillation index has also been mostly positive, meaning cold weather has been confined to the Arctic region rather than forming large loops southwards.

Yeah, distinct lack of cold enough weather to properly enjoy hot chocolate :(

I wish it rained more often where I live.

Rain took away the cherry blossom petals. They were beautiful while they stood on the branches of the tree outside my dorm. Every afternoon I saw the sunset behind them and was stopped for a moment before returning to my tasks. Now the tree holds blood red leaves. I wonder how they got that color. I haven't seen a cherry blossom tree with leaves like that before.

I do too. It's only rained here like twice in the last 8 months, recalling from memory.

Are you sure they are cherry trees? Ornamental plum varieties look very similar, but have red leaves. They may produce little fruits.

And come on man, wabi-sabi, impermanence is a form of beauty in the world :)

Weather's been great lately! I've been taking walks and enjoying it. It's a nice way to get away from the stress of normal living.

I met up with a good friend I hadn't seen in a while and had a chance to fly their FPV wing. It reminded of me of one of the chapters of Kotonoba Drive, looking back on the hill from the air and seeing us standing there!

Snowed for the past couple of days here, hard to believe that it is spring.

It just got cold again where I'm at, not cold enough to snow. However it snowed in April last year, only for like a minute.

Kind of wish it would be winter again and we could just skip summer, but I also love the rainy summer days. Kind of conflicted feelings in life now in general.

I went to this island with a friend.
https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/43.6609/-70.1881
I wanted it to be just a beautiful walk around Maine island. It ended up being a lot more than that.
We went for a walk around the island, like most Maine islands is was so beautiful it hurt. As we came around the east side however my friend saw something over the swamp. A massive concrete structure rising out of a hill. It was something I had never even heard of despite living here all my life. Battery Steele!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_Steele
It is MASSIVE on the inside. There is art everywhere, and not just the simple scribbles of teenagers, no, there was some really good stuff there. Things that obviously took a lot of skill and time to complete. Some rooms in the bunker were obviously filled with art installations at some point in the past. I even say this painting of a face -

http://www.highstrungloner.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/potd-20110401-074.jpg

Some parts of the bunker were cut off to us are they were filled with Atlantic sea water. We had a musical accompaniment for our exploration too, as some local kids who lived on the island were there for a hard-punk band practice. As my friend and I explored their haunting screams and guitar riffs let us know that we were not alone.

I plan to go back there some day with a bike, water, lots of lights, a proper camera, a tripod if I can get my hands on one. That was all we really had on us were our clothes and our phones.

Spring weather has finally arrived! Now the sun can properly heat the ground, gigantic towering clouds are forming, drifting across the landscape; they're adding a lovely sense of dynamism to the scene out the window.

Sounds like a fun trip out! Coastal batteries are such a weird little aberration of history, seemingly built by all the world powers for some sort of steampunk-ish all-out war with heavy artillery but no airborne explosvies that never came. And yeah, they never seem to exist until you're right on top of them...

I've only ever visited one over here, Cliffe Fort. When it's flooded, it feels like you're standing on the edge of a level in a platforming game!

http://imgur.com/a/8jTwb

I still plan to hire a boat with a friend or two and head out to see one of the Maunsell/Shivering Sands towers one day too (the things that Sealand was built on, there were a whole series of them built throughout estuary). Visiting one of the German flak towers is on the same list!

It's nice that Steele is preserved as a public space though; I think any society needs these big structures to go and mess around in, and it seems giving access to it has certainly been a success.

It's been constantly raining for very brief periods of time.
Roughly half an hour of sun followed by 10-15 minutes of rain, going on like that all day.
It's quite bothersome, can't really do any work in the yard like this but at the same time it's comfortable inside so I don't really mind.

I got a real bad RSI in my right arm, but I feel it's getting better. The weather has been nice recently and I really want to ride my bike and take photos and enjoy spring.

I was very sunny as I worked on cleaning out 40 years of crap from my friends dads barn. For a very sick man, I'm surprised I was able to get it all done in one day, as I did.

Raining here. I wish it snowed, but we can't get everything we ask for.

Find anything interesting? I'm convinced that barns have some sort of reality-distorting field that just materialises odd objects.

They put a small wind turbine up a couple of weeks ago on a tower building I can see from my room. The breeze never seems to stop up there; it seems so industrious, working all the time. Keep it up, wind turbine!

Another semester done. Only 3 to go. Does anyone ever get or has gotten that tingly feeling when the semester is over or about to be?

Like a melancholic/anxious one.
