I don't think it's a homosexuality thing. I think that ambiguity is appealing, athletic builds are appealing, and short haircuts are appealing.
I also think that it could have to do with wanting a stronger person in a relationship, or a more assertive person.
For some people it may be easier to relate to tomboys because of their boyish mannerisms.

I do really like tomboys. I love the short hair. I love seeing them in "male" formal attire. I love seeing them smile. I love seeing them totally gung-ho to do some activity that any more "feminine" female would run away from. When I've interacted with them in the past they treat me as an equal, like, just a person, and not like *the guy* as other women might. Sounds perfect, right?

Well, when I ask them out, they're usually gay. Oh well. At least at can look at photos of them through the 'net. Link dump time.

Tomboys came in different flavors.

IMO, tomboys are not all about girls who are into boys attitude. Mostly it's just girls who share same practical thinking as common men.

Trousers? practical.
Short hair? practical.
Sneakers? practical.
Rides motorcycle and into mechanic and DIY? practical.

For me, practical thinking is not, in any way, detrimental to a girl's beauty or feminity.

I can still tell you however, boys appreciate someone pulling efforts to look good once or twice.
