Post yer drawings, talk about drawings you like.

Here are a couple of digital illustrations I did recently. They're a bit uh, kitsch I suppose? My observational skills aren't up to par is what I mean, they need more real life in them. Gotta to go on more walks and sketch landscapes. Still digital painting isn't my comfort zone so they were good practice.

I had a university interview yesterday that went really well, feeling good about my portfolio now. I've applied for animation (Gonna make da animes)

http://ctrlpaint.com/ is a great place to start digitally.

When I did those paintings I was inspired by Eyvind Earle who was a fantastic painter who did the backgrounds for Sleeping Beauty.

I was trying to imitate his approach to painting which you can see at 4:40 in this video http://youtu.be/OAl9P4T12Rs

I haven't been drawing/painting for a few months; procrastination's a bitch.

Here's something I doodled a few nights ago, though.

I don't know much about art, but that seems like really good perspective and sense of scale. How long have you been practicing? I also appreciate that you drew her in full PJs, since I usually like cute more than lewd. Please post more of your stuff if you don't mind.

I'd like to take up sketching. I tried the "draw Igor Stravinsky upside down" exercise and it was just a half hour of frustration and didn't end up looking good as most people's first attempts. Maybe I should just do grid drawings ad nauseum?

You really shouldn't give up, especially not so early. Like with most other things, you'll never run out of things that need practicing. Read Art & Fear, it's absolutely fantastic reading for motivation.

As for myself, I've been practicing on and off for about three and a half years, very little imaginative stuff (please don't make this mistake yourself). The only other thing I have recently is this oekaki I did a few weeks ago: http://i.imgur.com/ea4VAFS.jpg

Thanks and good luck!

I haven't read Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and while I'm sure it's a helpful book the Stravinsky exercise and grid drawing seem like inane shit to me.

If you want to learn to draw there must be something you want to draw, so draw that not Igor Stravinsky. Draw whatever you want and be critical of it, not "The leg is a little off" critical but "How could I do the whole thing better?" critical. Identify what you need to improve and study it.

Immerse yourself in good art and other interests. Building taste is what fuels your desire to improve.

They're just exercises to establish the primitives of drawing down. Basic stuff like sighting proportions, angles, negative space etc.

In any case, grid-drawing has been used for a long time to establish accurate drawings. It's not exactly new, but it's not good practice either.

I went to my first figure drawing session yesterday! I was really nervous beforehand but it was okay in the end and I definitely feel like I got some much-needed practice in.
