New "textboard" coming up!

1 Name: !Capey7gV1s : 2014-04-01 06:53
For the longest time I have been trying to pull the old-fashioned textboard users into the 21st century with revolutionary web design. Today I will announce my new project which will successfully combine Pinterest,Tumblr and the textboards we have all come to love so much.

This new hybrid will integrate pictures, URLs, written pieces and ordinary threads into a cohesive layout with a high information density.

Thanks for your continued support and look forward to a big move again!

love,
capey

Now that April Fools' Day is over I can explain the joke. I'm actually making this with tablecat's new board software, but it won't replace the post office. It's more of a side-project.

The plan is to have one big index for threads, links, videos and images, basically replacing the usual threads about these things with a way to embed them as separate threads. For the ordening of these threads I plan to use Isotope: http://isotope.metafizzy.co/index.html

The entire project is on the backburner a bit, because I'm busy with my studies, but I hope to have made considerable progress by this summer.

This was bizarre. Now watch her become a regular...

Are you trying to greentext, son.

I don't think she is stupid. She spent 4 Minutes on a website, which is fundamentally different to your average online community. It's only natural, that she doesn't completely get it. It also shows, that the Post Office, while an anonymous bbs, still is pretty accessible. Imagine sending her to World4ch! This is what these usertesting peeks are about.

She probably just doesn't know IRC and if you only know "regular" forums, you'd ask yourself why there aren't any profile pictures, too.

I don't think, that the Post Office's content is random at all. To us, all of this is part of our culture. As a stranger, she thinks it's random. So this part of her critique can be easily dismissed.

The "?" on the TV bothers me as well. At first I thought it would be some kind of explanation and I think it's a valid point of criticism.

it becomes clear after clicking it once or twice, but maybe there should be a "random" tooltip to clarify.

Will the Photoboard support webm? After seeing them being used on 4chan, they just seem to be so much superior to gifs - and yet they are smaller than apng!

How appropriate to relaunch the site on this day! It has been quite a while without the Post Office and I'm glad to see it returned. We had some trouble with the previous server, but hope that we fair better with the current one. The Newspaper and Photoboard are still a bit bodged, but I hope to have those fixed soon.

I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words. I felt really guilty to have the site offline for so long and having it finally up seems like a positive step in the recovery process. Thanks for sticking with the board for all this time and even browsing it in the terrible state it has been. Here's to better days!

Aren't webms just H264s in special web-friendly containers?

webm containers include vp8 video, while H264 is usually contained in mp4 containers, at least that's what I learned in school.

WebM is basically a Matroska container with a limited subset of allowed video and audio codecs (only VP8/9 video and Vorbis(?) audio).

Currently working on new board software now. You can see a WIP here: http://textboard.dynu.com/

This is really comfy and does not stress browsers too much. Good stuff, dude.

We have discontinued Peek.
Damn, sending a bunch of outsiders to boards to experience their reaction used to be fun.

This thread reminds me of atob though it's just a little more Web 2.0ish for a textboard but not by much. Taba-tan over at 4taba is doing interesting work.

What was it like?

Looks nice, but I think the new layout is a bit wide. I think sites like these should enforce a max width for text, since I think reading shorter lines but thicker paragraphs is easier than reading one or two long lines. Easy for my eyes to get lost when the text wraps after long lines.

I liked the old design better. The new one's confusing. I just tried to click on the city pop thread and ended up someplace completely else.

You could hire people to visit your website, record it and narrate what do they thing about it. For testing the user experience.
