The filesharing and text discussion "faces" of usenet are now two distinct worlds as no one uses traditional usenet clients for the binary groups anymore. A number of text groups are active (not when compared to the 90s usenet, but compared to english textboards for example, they can be considered so). These are exclusively tech themed groups (c, unix, gopher and so on), all the others are completely dead. The problem of usenet today, among others, is the absurdly large topical structure with thousands now empty groups made at the time when there were actually people on it.
