Hypocrisy is the process between sincerity and submission, hypocrisy does not opposed sincerity, nor sincerity is a virtue but a false-virtue, this distinction is very well exposed by the french moralists, especially the augustinian-strict line: Berulle, Esprit, Pascal...

I'd rather believe that he really aspired for those values than just accuse him of being a charlatan because he's not the Incarnated Verbum Dei creating the real by means of words. He was an ordinary man fighting his own demons.
