If I might be so rude as to intrude,
I have some music for everyone.
It's a little varied, but it should go well with your mangoes and some tea.

Oh well. Maybe I'll get an answer next Tuesday (assuming Eggy comes back here next Tuesday).

Hi there friend, not sure when you'll get around to reading this but oh well. Next will probably be back on /a/, so I can only hope you find this anyway.

Here's my theory on why. Kino's journey for example was great in my opinion, it was about the world first and foremost, and Kino was true to form a traveler. SNTW on the other hand had a pretty cool world (The specultah threads had more depth than the show)it was about the girls first, and how they lived their normally every day lives for the most part.

I thought Kino's Journey's world was done kind of childishly. I don't know if maybe because since Kino was traveling through different specific places, they had to have a way to distinguish them? The stories seemed rushed and too storybook like, which doesn't work imo since it's supposed to be current (in the context) stories. It felt like in SNW they focused a little more on a general history of a much broader area, and that justified the lack of detail and it came off more believable to me.

Regardless of whether Kino no Tabi's stories were well-written, I think that, indeed, Kino no Tabi's 'world' wasn't realistic (nor was it meant to be). A bit like the supporting characters, the world was simplified and meant to help convey a body of stories more than anything. But were these stories well-written? I would like to think so, although I remember that some of them were very guilty of attacking non-issues (remember the democracy episode).

But I would actually subscribe to the notion that lack of focus on setting to favour characters is a bad idea in works that take place in a particular universe.

Aria: no prolonged focus on the characters until the last part of the series, after the world has been extensively fleshed out (mentality of New-Venitians, places to visit in Neo-Venezia, local folklore whether Venitian or Marsian, etc.).

Haibane Renmei: In making them interact with the world, the characters both are characterised and reveal information on the setting.

BLAME: Few characters, little emphasis on them. When extra characters appear, their characteristics contribute more to the world than to the characters themselves.

Kemono no Souja Erin, The Twelve Kingdoms, (or even Seirei no Moribito): These shows had a great length. Hence they could both detail their lores and politics, flesh out their characters, and even develop them! Youko in The Twelve Kingdom slowly assumes her role as a new sovereign, Erin grows a full 20 years and the two main characters in Seirei no Moribito grow large bonds. Notice how with the littlest number of episodes Seirei no Moribito also had the least exotic setting.

Kaiba: A very rich setting of science-fiction exploring the consequences of extractable memories on societies, and the main characters end up lacklustre. The most interesting thing about them are usually more important to the worldbuilding with showing all the possibili

After being unable to find it on the internet, I bought and uploaded Senoo Takeshi's "Retro Modern Dandy".

This might certainly interest you fellow Aria and YKK fans.

My god I forgot where I downloaded this from, I was going to make a thread on /a/ thanking whoever gave me the mediafire link because I absolutely love the album. Then I though "hang on a minute I didn't get it from the afternoon cafe did I" Lo and behold I did.

Downloaded it about 2 weeks ago and forgot about it until today. Just listened to it now and I was expecting some shit shoegaze but I got great piano music. Thank you so much OP, you've made my Christmas day.

I do love the Aria OST and all the OP/ED's especially Kin no Nami Sen no Nami, but my favourite OST's of all time would have to be Sketchbook Full Color's, Ano Hana and Yosuga no Sora. The two Aria Piano Albums are incredible though.

Here's a track from each:

Sketchbook OST - Kumo no Rei wo Iku
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ23OnEuc5A

Ano Hana OST - All About Her Death
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3zb5HUsnY0

I would post a YnS track but can't find anything decent on youtube that's in good quality as all the decent versions were removed for copyright infringement.

I don't know about the best because as time goes on I am constantly finding new music but it is really up there. It's currently summer here at the moment so it's quite relaxing listening to all the music, especially when I am driving.

Ahh Sketchbook, a shame there was only season but maybe one day if we're lucky we can get more.

I have the YnS track on my PSP and its quite well done, it was the ED I think?

Listening to some random radio on the internet, a certain track caught my attention with its great use of piano. It was composed by Bernward Koch as I learned later. Needless to say I checked some his albums and I was more than pleasantly surprised. His melodies were really mellow and the style of his works was just perfect for me. Using piano for the melodies and supporting the main sound with various other instruments such as flute or guitar. The relaxing atmosphere his works create is great to listen to late at night and the fact that they're far from being distractive makes them perfect for listening during a session of book reading. His album, Montagnola, was even dedicated to Herman Hesse. If you want to check him out, these are my few selections.

Now I'm not going to be arrogant enough to create an entirely new thread just for what I like so...

What have you discovered in recent memory? Any worthwhile musicians you would like to share with other Afternoon Cafe residents? Maybe a recommendation your friend made, or perhaps it's also something you just randomly stumbled upon.

I haven't really discovered Fifths of Seven recently, but I'd still like to share their music with you guys. I feel like a lot of you would love this stuff. Shame they only made one album, and seven years ago. I'm not sure if posting Mediafire links is against the rules, so I'll just post what I can find on YouTube.

Well, I've known Maaya Sakamoto for a very long time, and I'm sure all of you do, but only recently I've been delving more into a variety of work she did, and I simply can't stop listening. Her voice is absolutely amazing; perhaps in her live concerts even more so.

Definitely worth checking out.

Does the Afternoon Cafe like Touhou Arranges?
If so, what's your favorite circle?

My personal favorite is Sonic Hispeed Omega (Sonic Hybrid Orchestra after the third album). Their arranges are heavy, but very melodic. A mixture of speed, power and symphonic metal. It's a shame they don't use real instruments but only synths.

I also enjoyed the Foxtail-Grass album, although I've been looking out for new stuff for a while, so it was just kind of the norm from them, to me.

I very much enjoyed the TA NEETS album, but that might just be me being hyped up after listening several times. I'd daresay it's my favorite from them yet, though, just for the very different frantic pace of it. Very exciting and eyecatching, although I admit not really conducive to any classy sort of image they had going before.

As for other circles I enjoyed this year, Hachimitsu Lemon put out a nice long album that filled the folk niche well for me when combined with the Foxtail album. Melodic Taste was nice, but felt a bit unremarkable considering how good some Touhou orchestra can be. Marasy put out a fantastic sleep-themed album that broke a bit of the monotony of his usual straight up soundtrack arranges, not that I don't usually enjoy him plenty. Elsewhere in Touhou piano, Assaultdoor did another neat medly album, if Marasy didn't really do it for you. With more noisy sorts of music, Syrufit's new album was also pretty freat. There were a few songs that snuck in some wubwub without me even noticing, although I can't say I wouldn't have liked the album better without it. Excellent use of vocals in electronic music makes me happy, for some reason, since usually people botch it up.

My disappointment this time around was downloading the new Floating Cloud, only to find out it wasn't folk at all. Not sure why they decided to do a generic Miku album out of nowhere, but I didn't really bother listening to it since it wasn't the delicious irish folk I expected.

Everything else still needs listening to, sadly. I've been focusing on the games, mostly, since there were quite a few good ones this summer.

I'm not sure why I thought this was an appropriate adjective for music, but you get the point, I think.

My favourite is probably UI-70. In particlar, the album 'the view of spiral riverside'. Their Fate of Sixty Years arrange is godlike.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfWnat-6U8I

I also very much like the Morrigan/WAVE arranges with the choir. Oh, and Tutti Sound.

And a massive bunch of other stuff, I like most of it as long as it's instrumental and not vocal (aformentioned choir is obviously ok though).

Why is the entirety of Persona's collective OSTs so delicious?
There's only a couple tracks from Eternal Punishment that I don't particularly care for, but, other than that, it's a shining, golden, flawless series in my eyes.

What does the afternoon cafe think?
>> No. 209
I've never played persona before but I've been listening to the album you posted and this song has me considering picking the games up.

It's incredibly catchy.

The OST is fantastic, and along with the character designs, it's one of the reasons I really wanted to play one of the games. It's filled with catchy and well written music and it's a delight to listen to.
